Auditions for Oliver!
June 11 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The Seneca Community Players are proud to announce their 2023 late summer musical, Oliver! This classic musical is based on Charles Dickens’ novel, Oliver Twist, with book, music, and
lyrics by Lionel Bart. The SCP production will be directed by Doug Avery. Susan Avery will serve as music director and conductor. Chris Boulter is the producer. Performances will take place August 18-20 and 25-26, at the Lafayette Theatre in the former Main Street School in Waterloo.
While Oliver! has been a popular high school musical for decades, this production is being planned as something for the entire family. Adults will play the grown-up roles, and children and young people will play the youth roles. Auditions for all adults, as well as the young characters Oliver, Artful Dodger, and Bet will be held on 7 PM – 10 PM on June 11 & 12, with June 14 set aside for call-backs. Chorus auditions
for children and young people will be held Saturday morning, June 17, from 9 AM – noon. All auditions will take place at the Lafayette Theater. Rehearsals will begin as soon as the show is
cast.
Those auditioning for a lead/speaking role should bring at least 16 measures of a song from Oliver! or from another traditional book musical. Adults and children auditioning for chorus roles should be prepared to sing a traditional or patriotic sing that they know and to have their vocal range checked.
Prepared dialogue is not necessary, but everyone should be prepared to show off their British accent (standard British or Cockney). Those auditioning for leads will be assigned speaking excepts at the time of their audition. Everyone should be prepared to do some simple choreography, and should wear appropriate shoes and clothing.
Oliver! takes place on the streets of Victorian London, where the orphaned Oliver seeks a home, family, and – most importantly – love. He is joined by a host of colorful characters, including Fagin, the Artful Dodger, Nancy, Bill Sykes, and Mr. Bumble. Memorable songs from the show include “Consider Yourself,” “I’d Do Anything,” “Where is Love,” Oom-Pah-Pah,” “As Long As He Needs Me,” and “Food, Glorious Food.”
Oliver! opened on Broadway in January of 1963, and played 774 performances, winning three TONY awards. It was revived on Broadway in 1984. There have been several Olivier Award winning London productions over the years. The 1968 movie is one of the few musicals to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
